The Children of God / a mission statement

The whole thing, in one breath

God goes looking for the ones who weren’t looking for him — the scattered, the idle, the ones no man would hire — and he knows his own by a single mark: not power, not riches, but the ache to belong and be loved. In that soil he drops a seed. The seed is his word, and his word is Jesus.

It takes hold, it dies, and it sprouts — and what springs up is a living temple, growing from the inside, built by Jesus and by you together. Jesus sprouts from within you. The stone heart is turned to flesh. Wisdom is inside. And you — the rescued, the reaching — become what the psalm calls the good gods, the children of the Most High, with him living inside you.

Same thing, plainer

You don’t climb up to God — he comes looking for you, and he looks for the people who feel left out and just want to be loved, not the people who want to run things. He plants his word in that soft spot. The word is Jesus. It grows into a whole temple inside you, and you help build it. Your hard heart goes soft, you get his wisdom, and he lives in you. That’s what a child of God is: not a title you earn — a thing that grows in you once you let the seed in.

Who God looks for

1God goes looking for people. He looks for the ones who were not even looking for him.

2He wants the people who feel left out. The ones nobody picked. The ones who feel alone.

3He does not push his way to proud people. He comes to people who know they need help.

Good ground is “a good and pure heart” that hears and keeps the word. Luke 8:15

4These people are hungry inside. They want something real. They want to belong and be loved — not to be big and in charge.

The good gods “defend the poor” and “the outcast”; the proud who grab “shall die like men.” Psalm 82:3–7

How you grow

5God drops a seed into your heart. The seed is his word. His word is Jesus.

6The seed has to die first. Then it can grow into a lot.

“Except the wheat corn fall into the ground and die, it bideth alone. If it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” John 12:24

7The seed sprouts. A temple starts to grow inside you. It is alive. It is not built out of stone.

8Your hard heart turns soft. It used to be like a stone tablet. Now it is a soft page. God writes his new deal on it — in ink, not carved in stone — for many people. Wisdom grows there too.

9Jesus does not just stop by. He moves in and lives inside you.

What you do

10You take Jesus in. You listen to him, eat him, drink him, and stay close.

11Then you grow good fruit. You share it. You help build the temple with him.

What Jesus is (and is not)

13Jesus is the vine. You are a branch on him. You get your life from him.

14Jesus is also the Sprout. He is the little shoot that grows up inside you.

15Jesus is not the fruit or the wine. You make those with him, together.

“He that abideth in me… the same bringeth forth much fruit.” (The branch grows the fruit, not the vine.) John 15:5

16The temple is not just Jesus either. You help build it with him.

How God works

17God works in two ways at the same time. He works outside you, and inside you.

The Spirit moves first, then the word speaks. Genesis 1:2–3

18Outside: God’s Spirit finds you and clears the way. He gives you signs and little pushes. (Like a dream.)

“The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2

19Inside: God’s word — Jesus — grows in you.

20This did not just happen long ago. It is happening right now. Jesus has always been here.
